Dave Sletten Remembered: A History of the Early Wolverines CJO

tu_ss_nrc_2007.jpg

The legendary New Riverside Cafe' on the corner of
Cedar & Riverside; the West Bank; Minneapolis, MN.
Others can speak more eloquently about its history
and significance, but my take on it back in the late
'60's - early '70's was a laid-back, open-to-new-ideas
gathering place where one could get a safe, healthy
meal at reasnoable prices.  It was also a place that
welcomed new musical talent.

I'd been fashioning myself to be a Singer/Sonwriter for
several years, but mostly played for friends and rarely in
public.  My first public venue was the old Scholar
Coffeehouse on the West Bank (which was transplanted
from the East Bank where Bob Dylan first auditioned).  I
had long hair that was usually in a ponytail, but for this
debut I let it all hang out and got it caught in my harmonica
holder...  The owner said to come back when I've got my
act together...

The Scholar finally fell by the wayside, so the two hip
clubs on the West Bank were the Coffeehouse Extempore'
and the New Riverside Cafe'.  I'd played both several times,
but this NRC concert is the only Live! session caught on tape.

Special thanks to Ed Beaty, 2nd Guitar/Vocal.  Ed moved on
to become a master guitar-builder and resides in parts unknown.
We had some beautiful sessions together.  Thanks, Ed.

Live! at the New Riverside Café

9/29/72

01. Braggadocio

'Braggadocio' they call me.

Sweet pal o' mine: "What can it mean?"

You wonder. Hmm.

Every place I go I'm thinkin':

"Nothin' I can do, nothin' I can say

Without you". Hmm.

'Braggadocio' means I'm talkin'

Like a man at ease with his whole damn self;

And you're the reason. Hmm.

02. Jimmy & The Chrysler

Jimmy, you gotta go now.

But, don't you be leaving without the time to say 'goodbye' to me and mine

'Cuz, buddy, what you leave behind is gonna miss your kind.

Jimmy, you('ve) got a car now;

And a lady-friend down by your side; and you know foolin' with the radio

And cruisin' down the open road is the only way to go.

And when you stop for gas don't you forget me.

Jimmy, you're almost there now.

Well, the Chrysler she may be a hog, but still, getcha there I think she will.

And she'll prove to ya when she makes that hill that

'White Lightning' is not the biggest thrill.

03. Hey There, Dog

Hey there, dog--they didn't have to do it.

Why can't they leave us alone?

And I can't think what terrible pain did hurt them

That hardened their hearts into stone.

Late last night you strayed away from home.

I tried to find you but they had already strychnined you.

Now you're gone; and all that I remember

Is you and your doggone eyes.

04. If My Time Should Come Tomorrow

(Traditional)

If my time should come tomorrow

And my race on earth is run

I’d like to stay a little longer

Not my will but Thine be done

Please let me stay a little longer

So many things I’d like to do

I’d like to show my friends around me

Just what it means to live for You

Sometimes I feel my work is finished

Burden seems so hard to bear

I’ve got a longing to see helven

For my mom and daddy’s there

Please let me stay a little longer

So many things I’d like to do

I’d like to show my friends around me

Just what it means to live for You

One, my mom and daddy’s there

Two, my mom and daddy’s there

Three, my mom and daddy’s there

For my mom and daddy’s there

05. Baby, Don’t Leave Your Mother

Baby, don't leave your mother--she needs you much more than me.

Well, the hopes and fears of all her golden years have passed her by the way.

There never will be another to give what your momma gave.

For all those years she understood the tears that hid your love away.

Your daddy he was a hard man. He never was so kind

As to let you know he wanted so to show that he loved you by the way.

So tell your ma she need not fret.

Someday you('ve) got to go--but not quite yet.

06. Yes, Once She Knew Me Well

She thanked me for myself and I said

I would be that for her.

She caught me when I fell.

Soothed me with her eyes and I

Thanked her on a string that never broke

As far as she could tell.

Yes, once she knew me well.

Don'tcha think I know how tired you get when

All you hear from me is, "Yes, but don't you see?"

It's just that nothing ever meant so much to me as that

And that's from the heart without the jealousy.

No lie, how she once knew me.

07. Kjaerlighet

Jeg er ikke sa dom som i serut

Jeg er ikke sa dom som i serut

Fannte kjering, du

Du er fannte kjering, du

Jeg skulle ha du.

Hmm……

Ah……..

I mannei

I’m not as dumb as I look

I’m not as dumb as I look

Helluva woman, you

You’re one helluva woman, you are

I shall have you

Hmm……

Ah……..

08. Ramona

(Mabel Wayne)

I wander out yonder, o’er the hills,

Where the mountains high seem to kiss the sky.

Someone is out yonder, o’er the hills,

Waiting patiently—waiting just for me.

Ramona, I hear the mission bells above.

Ramona they’re ringing out a song of Love.

I press you, caress you and

Bless the day you taught me to care,

To always remember the

Rambling rose you wore in your hair.

Ramona, when day is done you’ll hear my call.

Ramona, we’ll meet beside the waterfall.

But I dread the dawn when

I awake to find you gone.

Ramona, I need you my own.

09. Darla & The Corndiggers

Stop the music. Listen to my tale of woe:

Darla's up and left me and she didn't leave a thing in the fridge.

What's a fella gonna do without his little sugar-mom?

Where the heck you think I'm 'sposed to go (I haven't got a penny to my name)?

No use cryin', I don't think she's comin' back.

But, how she did deceive me! And now I have to find a job.

Wait a second, whaddya know, there is one thing she left behind:

'Corndiggers', out of site! And now that she is gone, why, they're all mine!

"You can dig 'em in the box. You can dig 'em in your dips.

They're not like crackers and they're not like chips.

They're little Cornshovels and they taste hot-popped.

When you dig 'Corndiggers'--It's hard to stop.

It's hard to stop. It's hard to stop."

10. The Lady In The Parlour

The Lady in the Parlour is sitting on her bum.

The merchant from the harbour is pointing with his thumb:

"There's this daughter of mine" says he, " and it looks like you

Know what you've got to do."

You tell them you're the brother of every man alive. And

They needn't look any further and they'd better cut the jive.

'Cuz the mother is with her now and you know it's true.

So shove it up your shoe.

11. Babe, Not That It’s The First Time

Babe, not that it's the first time,

But it is the worst time

Not to know that you decide to go

And time goes by so slow--I love you so.

Babe, not that it's the wrong time

But it is such a long time

Not to hear a word from you in years

And always with the fears: You're gone for good.

Babe, not that it's the best time,

But maybe next time

You could see the things you do to me,

Well, I could do to you. Please don't be gone.

12. Tonight’s The Night

I don't want to burden you, but

Help me just for tonight.

Wish you may and I wish you might

Help me get through the night.

All my tears came out today

So help me fight through the night.

Hold me tight; don't let me go.

Just help me get through the night.
